7 Will Climbing Earrings cause skin irritation?
Sometimes people come by our booth at shows and tell to us about how frustrated they are to have a skin reaction to their
jewelry. Usually it's not all jewelry, just some types and its hard to guess in advance which pieces will cause it. I wanted to be
able to answer these questions as well as to know that my Climbing Earrings were as safe as possible. Most jewelry allergies
occur in the presence of nickel alloys. As a nickel alloy sits against the skin, the natural sweat and oils from the skin oxidize
the metal. As a result of the oxidation, a thin layer of nickel salts form on top of the metal. Those nickel salts irritate the skin
and cause allergic dermatitis. I'm not a doctor but it was easy for me to conclude that I wanted to avoid metals that contained
these irritants. I did some research and found that both Sterling Silver and Argentium Sterling Silver do not contain nickel.
I have chosen to handcraft our Climbing Earrings using Argentium Sterling Silver. It is made of 93.5% pure silver, even a little
more than traditional Sterling Silver at 92.5%. Like Sterling, it contains a small amount of copper to make it harder, plus a
small amount of Germanium. Germanium also acts as a hardener, and has the added benefit of making the silver tarnish-
resistant. I like that as a wonderful side benefit. It is guaranteed to be nickel-free. It is actually whiter and brighter than
Platinum and White Gold, and maintains its shine with very little care.
Now if those are not sufficient benefits, top it of with the fact that Argentium Sterling Silver is known as the “Responsible
Silver”. There is an increasing awareness and demand for the preservation of our natural environment - to conserve energy
and natural resources and to reduce waste and pollution. What makes Argentium Sterling Silver responsible? Argentium
guarantees traceability of its raw silver and is certified that it is produced using only recycled silver. Argentium’s also requires
less toxic chemicals when processing certain finished pieces that have been heat treated.
You will be happy to learn that we are using Argentium Sterling Silver exclusively.
